A scammer calls and tells you that you owe money to the government. He uses fear to force you into making a payment by different methods. The individuals making the calls are very organized and work in groups. In almost all cases, they don’t even call from Canada. They are located in India or Pakistan. They usually leave you a message with a phone number to call back. You’re threatened with legal action if you don’t cooperate. They can also tell you that there is a warrant for your arrest.

Many Canadians have been victims of the CRA Phone Scam or Fraud Calls. They lose thousands of dollars because of fear. Some even reported threats to their immigration status.

The funniest demands from the scammers are the payment methods. They ask their victims to pay them with gift cards, Bitcoins or other crazy ways.

The Canada Revenue Agency will not threaten you for falling on your taxes. They will never ask you to make a payment using gift cards or cryptocurrencies.
